Content Management System (CMS)
The topic of Content Management is fairly large, with lots of options and tradeoffs. The overall objective, by contrast, is simple: A Content Management System allows you to post content on a website without having to deal with the complexities of the website. For example, with a CMS, you can post new content to your site as easily as tapping out an email. You can also click-and-drag pictures to your web pages. Or you can use a CMS to enter events on a calendar and have them automatically post to your site at a pre-designated date. Or any combination of the above, and lots more!
You may have heard about some of the more popular CMS software out there. WordPress, Drupal and Joomla are among the most popular.
At Ruysdael Design, we prefer to work with a CMS called "MODx." MODx implements some of the most advanced features of modern-day CMS packages. For example, it implements something called the "Model-Viewer-Controller" software model -- MVC -- which is a fancy way of saying that the site's artwork is separated from its code, and both are separated from the underlying database. What does this all mean? It means that an artist can sculpt the site without having to worry about the underlying code. It means that the programmer can turn on a cool new feature without having to worry about the art. And the data remains separated from both, so that both the artwork and the code can be changed without losing any content. This helps when you want to give your site that periodic "face-lift" to dazzle your customers every year or so. There are several other excellent MVC packages out there, but we feel MODx has the strongest support and is easiest to maintain.
